Del Castillo, Jacob top Gawad Komisyon 2008


OWEN L. Del Castillo of Pilar, Sorsogon and Estelito B. Jacob of Camaligan, Camarines Sur emerged as the grand prize winners in the 2008 Gawad Komisyon Literary Contest sponsored by Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino (KWF-Manila) and Panrehiyong Sentro ng Wikang Filipino, Bicol University (PSWF-BU).
The Gawad Komisyon 2008 is a literary contest for poetry and short story in ten Philippine languages --- Tagalog, Ilokano, Pangasinan, Kapampangan, Bikol, Samar-Leyte, Sugbuanong Binisaya, Hiligaynon, Maranao, and Tausug
In a letter dated December 1, 2008, KWF and PSWF-BU announced Del Castillo and Jacob as first placers in Bikol poetry and short story, respectively.
Del Castillo teaches Filipino and Values Education subjects at St. Agnes Academy. He has won Premio Tomas Para sa Parabasa in 2004 and co-authored a book of poetry entitled “Tilamsik ng Magpakailanman”.
Jacob, author of “Mga Nirukitdukit” (NCCA, 2005), teaches English and literature at the University of Nueva Caceres and won several awards in poetry such as Mga Tula Para ki Ina, 2nd Place (1999), Home Life, 3rd Place (2007), and Gawad Surian sa Tula-Gantimplang Collantes, Karangalang Banggit (2007).
Other winners for poetry include: Sonny C. Sendon of San Nicolas, Iriga City (2nd), Adrian V. Remodo of Pacol, Naga City (3rd), Jovert R. Balunsay of Sto. Domingo, Albay, H.Francisco V. Peñones of Sta. Cruz, Iriga City, and Eduardo E. Uy of Ariman, Gubat, Sorsogon for consolation prizes.
For short story, winners include Rodel D. Añosa of Sawang, Aroroy, Masbate and Jaime J. Borlagdan of Bombon, Tabaco City (2nd), Owen L. Del Castillo of Pilar, Sorsogon (3rd), Dr. Eden K. Nasayao of Arimbay, Legazpi City, Xavier L. Zamora of Sagpon, Albay, and Alex Michael S. Boribor of Pioduran, Albay for consolation prizes.
Winners received a certificate of merit and a cash prize of P 15,000.00 for 1st place; P 10,000.00 for 2nd place; P 8,000.00 for 3rd place, P 2,000.00 each for consolation prize . Awarding was held at Sentro ng Wikang Filipino, Bicol University, Legazpi City, last December 17, 2008.
